ASAKUSA is a diary that visualizes the precious days that Dutch artist Ronin de Goude spent under his master tattoo artist, Horiwa, in Asakusa. In 2016, Ronin returned to Japan to photograph Horiwa's work and Horiwa in the act of tattooing for a publication about traditional Japan tattoo art. Ronin's polite silence and concentration as he observed many of the carving sessions did not go unnoticed, and he was invited to help with the Nichijou tasks, and then eventually allowed to photograph Horiwa up close. From then on, Ronin returned to Tokyo two or three times a year and frequently met with Horiwa's clients, mid-level yakuza, subordinate bosses, and young men. Photographing Horiwa's workshop, portraits of his clients, scenes from the Sanja Matsuri, intimate shots of yakuza enjoying life and their families, and two years ago Ronin became the Official Photograph for the largest yakuza organisation taking part in the Sanja Matsuri, the Asakusa Takahashi Gumi V.
